(BBC Sport) Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho criticised referee Andre Marriner's performance after his side lost at home to Chelsea, who continued their unbeaten start under new boss Thomas Tuchel and moved into the Premier League's top six. Jorginho's first-half penalty, awarded after Eric Dier clumsily upended Timo Werner, gave the Blues a win their more progressive approach deserved against a Spurs side devoid of ideas and ambition until it was too late. But Mourinho, who talked to Marriner at length as they walked off the pitch on Thursday, said: "I consider him one of the best referees in the Premier League. I care for him and one I have big admiration for him. That gives me a good position to tell him I did not like his performance. In the end a penalty decides the game. In the end they score a penalty which is not a penalty where you say it is a dangerous situation, one on one, almost scoring. It's a penalty that is difficult to accept and to lose the game like this is a bit painful." Tuchel has now enjoyed two wins and a draw, without conceding a goal, since replacing the sacked Frank Lampard, and while the animated German occasionally displayed signs of frustration in his technical area, this was ultimately a satisfying outcome. "The whole first half we totally controlled the game," said Tuchel. "Maybe we lost confidence in the second half because we lost the ball possession. "A bit more killer instinct and more aggression in the box would have been nice. It was a big win in an away game and I am very happy." In contrast, it was a third successive defeat in a dismal sequence for Tottenham and Mourinho, as they were punished for a desperately negative gameplan which, shorn of main marksman Harry Kane, barely gave Chelsea an anxious moment until Carlos Vinicius headed Serge Aurier's cross wide at the far post when unmarked late on.

(BBC Sport) Patrick Bamford scored the 100th goal of his career as Leeds United gained a deserved victory over Crystal Palace to move into the top half of the Premier League table. The 27-year-old finished into an open goal to make it 2-0 as he converted a rebound after Eagles goalkeeper Vicente Guaita had parried Raphinha's shot. Earlier on, Leeds had taken a third-minute lead when Jack Harrison's strike from the edge of the penalty area took a big deflection off Gary Cahill and looped past Guaita. Bamford's century of goals includes 21 on loan at MK Dons, eight on loan with Derby, 33 with Middlesbrough and 38 with his current side. "The most important thing is getting the three points but it is nice to get to 100 career goals," said Bamford, who was with Chelsea for five years but had seven loan spells elsewhere and never played a competitive game for the Blues. "It is probably long overdue but nice to get there." The victory moves Leeds up from 11th and above Arsenal to 10th, while Palace, who themselves would have gone into the top half with a win, remain 13th. Bamford's 12th Premier League goal of the season means only two English players - Tottenham's Harry Kane and Everton's Dominic Calvert-Lewin, both with 13 - have scored more goals than him. "What a player he has been this season for Leeds," said former England striker Chris Sutton on BBC Radio 5 Live. "People doubted whether he could score goals at this level but he has done. I would give him a go for England. I really like him, he has proved a lot of people wrong this season." England have three World Cup qualifiers at the end of March - at home against San Marino and Poland with an away game in Albania in between. Bamford said he did not expect international recognition but it was nice to be talked about. "If you had said that at the start of the season I would've brushed it off and said 'you're mad', but now people are talking about it," added the former England Under-21 forward. "We have four or five strikers that have not been involved in the England squad many times and they are doing well so it will be interesting to see who gets called up." Bamford, who failed to score in a nine-game loan spell with the Eagles in 2015-16, could have got on the scoresheet in the first half but saw a header saved by Guaita and then shot wastefully over the crossbar with only the goalkeeper to beat. Raphinha and Pascal Struijk had opportunities to also score for a dominant Leeds and Harrison nearly grabbed his second and Leeds' third late on but saw his effort rebound off the crossbar.

(BBC Sport) David Moyes says it "nearly feels uneasy" talking about West Ham's place near the top of the Premier League after the Hammers beat bottom club Sheffield United. Declan Rice's penalty, a header by Issa Diop and a third from substitute Ryan Fredericks lifted Moyes' side into the top four and a Champions League spot. However, Chelsea's win over Newcastle in Monday's late kick-off meant West Ham finished the day fifth - above champions Liverpool. "We've got five games before April and if we make it to there it might start hotting up," said Moyes after a sixth West Ham win in eight league games. "But it nearly feels uneasy talking like this. The teams around us are top, top teams and we are going to have to play incredibly well to be there. But I think we've got another gear or two to what we've shown tonight." Chris Basham's lunge on Jesse Lingard helped gift the Hammers victory, Rice making no mistake from the spot before Diop, who was forced off with a head injury in his previous game, doubled the lead from Aaron Cresswell's corner. Substitute Fredericks added a third deep into stoppage time. Sheffield United, 14 points from safety with 14 games left, went close to equalising at 1-0 only for Lukasz Fabianski to produce an outstanding save to keep out David McGoldrick's deflected header. (BBC Sport) Timo Werner scored and assisted as he ended a 14-game goal drought to help Chelsea to victory over Newcastle in the Premier League at Stamford Bridge. Werner's cross rebounded out to Olivier Giroud to net Chelsea's opener in the first half, after the France striker replaced the injured Tammy Abraham. Summer signing Werner then made it 2-0 eight minutes later, scrambling in a flick-on at the back post. Victory sees Chelsea move back up to fourth place, ahead of West Ham. The Hammers, who comfortably beat Sheffield United earlier on Monday night, are level on points with Chelsea but both sides sit above defending champions Liverpool as competition for Champions League places heats up. "We knew we had the opportunity to jump into the top four," Tuchel told BBC Sport. "We took this chance and the guys get a well deserved two days off now. There was a big gap between us when we started. It's not over. Now we've made it and it's the moment to hang in and keep on showing the hunger we had. We've made this big step today. We have to follow up and not lose any intensity or determination."

(The Guardian) In sports news, Pep Guardiola believes football will experience a rise in Covid cases again as a result of next month’s international break but has indicated he will not prevent any Manchester City players from travelling. At the start of this month Fifa announced that clubs were not obliged to release players for internationals in countries that require a quarantine of five or more days on return. For elite sportspeople in the UK a 10-day quarantine applies after visiting red list countries such as Portugal and all of South America. This means City could order Bernardo Silva, João Cancelo, Rúben Dias, Gabriel Jesus and Sergio Agüero to remain at home but Guardiola said City were not currently minded to do so even though those players would then miss the game at Leicester on 3 April. “The players are going to the national team,” the manager said. -Read more: www.theguardian.com/football/2021/feb/16/pep-guardiola-warns-international-break-will-lead-to-more-covid-cases

(BBC Sport) Relegation-threatened Fulham lost some of the momentum built up by their win at Everton but showed battling qualities to claim a point at Burnley. Of the three sides currently adrift at the bottom of the Premier League, the Cottagers seem the most capable of clawing their way to safety, as illustrated by their impressive win at Goodison Park on Sunday. But they failed to repeat that bright and incisive display at Turf Moor against a typically hard-working and competitive Clarets side, who married their industry with the game's main moments of attacking ingenuity. It was the visitors, though, who took the lead, as much through fortune as design, with Ola Aina's chested effort from a corner finding the net despite an attempted clearance from Robbie Brady on the line. Crucially, the visitors were denied the time to draw confidence from the opener, with Burnley hitting back three minutes later through a well-taken Ashley Barnes finish, following a superb low ball from Jay Rodriguez. The same two strikers had both narrowly failed to get a goal-bound touch on a superb low cross from James Tarkowski in the first half, while Rodriguez saw a low drive kicked away by Alphonse Areola shortly after his side had levelled the score. The draw represents an opportunity missed for Burnley to put further ground between themselves and the London side, with the gap between the two a sizeable but not yet entirely comfortable eight points. Scott Parker's side remain six points shy of safety, with Newcastle the 17th-placed side most in danger of being reeled in. (BBC Sport) Carlo Ancelotti believes Manchester City are hurtling towards a third Premier League title in four seasons after his Everton side were beaten by the Premier League leaders. The Everton boss said it was "almost impossible" to compete against Pep Guardiola's side, who extended their lead at the top to 10 points with 14 matches remaining. "I think so, it is really difficult to say another name," said the Italian when asked if Everton had lost to the team that will become champions. "It was hard, almost impossible. At the moment they are the best team, they have quality, power, belief. It is very difficult to compete with them." Phil Foden fired City on their way to a 17th successive win in all competitions with a right-footed shot which hit Everton substitute Seamus Coleman on its way past Jordan Pickford. Hard-working Everton were back on level terms five minutes later, Lucas Digne's powerful attempt coming back off the post and hitting Richarlison before flying over the line. However, a wonderful curling finish from 18 yards by Riyad Mahrez restored City's lead before Bernardo Silva beat Pickford from a similar distance in the closing stages. By beating Everton they also become the first team in English top-flight history to win their opening 10 matches in a calendar year.
