(BBC Sport) Jude Bellingham became the youngest English player in Champions League history as he was named in Borussia Dortmund's side to face Lazio. At 17 years and 113 days, the England Under-21 international beat the record held by Phil Foden, who plays for Manchester City. Midfielder Bellingham joined Dortmund from Birmingham this summer. He had already made himself his new club's youngest ever goalscorer with his debut goal against Duisberg.

(BBC Sport) Lionel Messi scored in a joint record 16th Champions League season and 17-year-old Pedri netted his first senior goal as Barcelona beat Ferencvaros. Messi struck from the penalty spot to give Barca the lead after he was felled at the end of a weaving run. Ansu Fati volleyed Barca's second, with Philippe Coutinho adding a third. Gerard Pique was sent off for a foul that set up Ihor Kharatin to narrow the deficit with a penalty, but Pedri and Ousmane Dembele ensured Barca's win. Pique's dismissal is a costly one for the Spanish side, with the experienced defender now suspended for their trip to Italian champions Juventus in gameweek two. But Barca will be lifted by Pedri's low finish, with the teenager already starting to draw attention to himself after just a handful of appearances for the club. His contribution is a serious rival to Messi's for headline of the evening, with the Argentine forward's goal taking him level with former Manchester United winger Ryan Giggs as the players to have scored in the most separate Champions League campaigns. Messi also assisted the goal for Dembele, who stepped off the bench to add to what was a mood-brightening evening for the La Liga side, who have spent the summer trying to rebuild after their humiliating exit at the hands of Bayern Munich in last season's Champions League. They have had an inconsistent start to their league campaign under Ronald Koeman, underlined by a shock loss to Getafe at the weekend. After that game, Koeman said that the performances of talisman Messi, who spent the summer angling for a move away from the club with whom he has spent his entire career, "could be better". On Tuesday he was. The Dutchman also said he did not believe Barca were favourites for either La Liga or the Champions League this season but that "we can go far". Observers had great reason to doubt even this qualification in the first quarter of Tuesday's game, during which Tokmac Nguen had a superb solo goal ruled out for offside and Isael hammered a drive against the crossbar. But Messi's strike settled them and from there they grew into the game and began to show a bit of their old swagger. The re-building job remains a work in progress and the Ferencvaros result is far from a barometer. But, if Koeman can continue to get a tune out of Messi and consistent support from the likes of Fati, Coutinho, Dembele and Pedri, the future may not be as glum as it once seemed.

(BBC Sport) Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane took responsibility for "a bad night" as the 13-time European Cup winners were handed a humiliating defeat by a second-string Shakhtar Donetsk side. The Ukrainian champions arrived in Madrid without 13 first-team players after 19 positive Covid-19 tests throughout the club left them needing to call up youth-team players. But Luis Castro's young side were undaunted and swept into an amazing, but thoroughly warranted, 3-0 lead at Real's empty Alfredo di Stefano training ground. Goals from Luka Modric and Vinicius Junior after the break gave Real hope, but there was no escape for the competition's most decorated side despite a dramatic finale. Federico Valverde thought he had hit a stoppage-time leveller but after a check at the pitchside monitor referee Srdjan Jovanovic disallowed the goal for offside. The defeat follows a shock 1-0 home defeat newly-promoted Cadiz in La Liga on Saturday. "I did not see the team as I wanted and when you do not see the team as you wanted it is your fault," Zidane said. "It's a bad game, a bad night. I'm the coach and it's up to me to find the solution. We deserve the criticism, all of us, and me first. Luckily we had a reaction in the second half because they don't deserve that, they are champions and it bothers me. I am responsible and I have to look for solutions because that cannot happen." Club legend Zidane won the Champions League in each of his first three seasons in charge of Real, but his decision to rest players with next Saturday's El Clasico against Barcelona in mind was a rare, and huge, aberration. Without captain Sergio Ramos - left in the stands with a knee injury - Real's defence was a mess and could do little to prevent Mateus Tete and Manor Solomon scoring either side of a Raphael Varane own goal. Tellingly, Real have now lost seven of their last eight Champions League games without Ramos at the heart of their backline. Former Tottenham midfielder Modric hit a stunning long-range strike to bring a ray of hope and, although Vinicius scored within 15 seconds of coming, on Shakhtar held on for a famous result. "We have a match every three days. But hey, there is no excuse," Zidane said. "These are decisions that I have made and I have to find what will lead us to become strong again and win. And I have few days."

(BBC Sport) Everton forward Moise Kean scored twice as Paris St-Germain recovered from losing Neymar to injury to beat Istanbul Basaksehir in the Champions League. PSG were not at their best but went ahead in the second half when Kean, on loan from the Toffees, headed in. Neymar had gone off midway through the first half after appearing to pull a muscle. Kean then got his second with a fine finish on the turn inside the box. The result was a little harsh on the hard-working hosts, who had the better chances before Kean first struck. Shortly before PSG's goal, Edin Visca had forced a good save out of goalkeeper Keylor Navas after capitalising on a defensive error. Navas made another good save to prevent the hosts from equalising, batting away Deniz Turuc's stinging half-volley on the run. Prior to scoring, PSG's best chance had been a Kylian Mbappe effort, which he lashed wide from a promising position. But Kean took centre stage in the second half as he took his tally to four goals in four games since joining PSG from Everton on 4 October. The win was PSG's first in this year's Champions League after they lost their Group H opener to Manchester United last week.
