(The Guardian) Europa League draw in fullJust as it was for Champions League quarterfinal draw, the Europa League looks lopsided. Manchester United, Sevilla, Juventus and Sporting will all battle it out for just one place in the final. On the other side you’ve got the tournament debutants from Belgium as well as the fifth best team in Italy and the ninth best team in Germany. To be fair to Feyenoord, they are top of the Dutch league and will therefore fancy themselves. Still, good luck predicting this one. SF 1: Winner of QF 2 v Winner of QF 1Juventus/Sporting CP v Manchester United/Sevilla. That is a tough side of the draw! SF 2: Winner of QF 4 v Winner of QF 3Feyenoord/Roma v Bayer Leverkusen v Union Saint-Gilloise. No easy games, of course, but you’d much rather be on this side.

(The Guardian) Ten Hag still awaiting fitness updatesErik ten Hag is still awaiting an update on the fitness of Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane as Manchester United prepare for Sunday’s match at Nottingham Forest. Thursday’s Europa League quarter-final first leg against Sevilla ended in a chaotic, and potentially costly, 2-2 draw at Old Trafford. Varane went off at half-time against Sevilla and Martinez was taken away on a stretcher towards the end of the match, having pulled up holding his right ankle. Asked if he could provide an update on the pair, Ten Hag shook his head and said: “Sorry, no. It’s not even 24 hours so I don’t have a complete diagnosis so I can’t tell in this moment.” When reports that Martinez had broken a metatarsal were put to the United boss, Ten Hag said: “I can’t say in this moment. When we have news, we will give it straight to you. But let’s do the medical, do the assessment, fully diagnose, complete diagnose and then we will give the news. It doesn’t change in this moment. I have an idea [what is is] but I don’t cause speculation.”

(BBC Sport) Federico Gatti scored a 97th-minute equaliser to earn Juventus a draw against Sevilla in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final. Gatti headed in from two yards after Paul Pogba superbly kept the ball in as a Danilo header was set to drift wide. It cancelled out Youssef En-Nesyri's 26th-minute goal, with the striker stroking in Lucas Ocampos' cross. Sevilla dominated the game for large periods but were left to rue missed chances by En-Nesyri and Ocampos. Juventus were lacklustre for most of the game, with Gatti's header only their second effort on target in the game. Sevilla, who knocked out Manchester United in the quarter-finals, have won the Europa League a record six times, most recently in 2020. They had 13 shots including five on target, and arguably should have left Turin with a bigger advantage with En-Nesyri taking too long to shoot when through on goal moments after his opener.
Edoardo Bove's second-half goal gave Jose Mourinho's Roma the advantage over Bayer Leverkusen after the first leg of their Europa League semi-final. The 20-year-old passed into the bottom corner after Tammy Abraham's shot was saved to score his first European goal. Leverkusen's best chance saw Florian Wirtz drag wide in the sixth minute. They had a chance to equalise in the 86th minute but Jeremie Frimpong's effort after a mistake by Rui Patricio was blocked. Could Mourinho head to PSG next? Penalty appeals from the same incident were waved away by Premier League referee Michael Oliver. However, Roma could have taken the lead before half-time but for an excellent save to keep out Roger Ibanez's header. If they advance to the final, Mourinho would hope to maintain an outstanding record - he guided Roma to success in the Europa Conference League last season and has won his previous five European finals in charge of Porto, Real Madrid, Manchester United and Roma. The game saw Mourinho up against his former player at Real Madrid in Xavi Alonso, with the Spaniard, now manager at Leverkusen, having previously played 151 games for the Portuguese manager over three seasons.

(UEFA Europa League) Leverkusen made the early running in the opening exchanges of the first leg in Rome seven days earlier and the Serie A outfit were clearly keen for there to be no repeat this time around. A searching ball from the Roma defence was nodded into the path of skipper Lorenzo Pellegrini by Tammy Abraham's cushioned header, but the Giallorossi captain's low effort flew wide. Die Werkself did not take long to push forward in search of their aggregate equaliser. A crisp passing interchange inside the hosts' half picked out the run of Moussa Diaby down the right. He burst into the Roma box but his fierce, right-footed strike cannoned off the crossbar with Rui Patrício beaten. Kerem Demirbay was denied on three occasions by the Roma keeper in the first half alone, with the pick of the saves coming when his low shot skidded up off the turf and forced the Portuguese international to divert it out for a corner. Xabi Alonso's Leverkusen, who fired 12 attempts to the visitors' solitary strike in the first 45 minutes, were initially unable to find the same intensity after the interval and it took until midway through the second period for the first real test for the Giallorossi keeper. Shortly after Sardar Azmoun headed straight at Rui Patrício, the keeper was able to get down low to push another low, awkward Demirbay shot away from danger. Leverkusen went in search of the goal they craved, with attacking replacements Amine Adli, Adam Hložek and Nadiem Amiri all coming off the bench in the closing stages. Largely restricted to long-range efforts by some resolute Roma defending, Leverkusen finally broke into the box with nine minutes left, but Azmoun, quickest to react to a loose ball, clipped the ball wide, and the Giallorossi held on to make it back-to-back European showpieces and a first final appearance in this competition since 1991.
Inseparable in Turin, the return contest between these sides featured a quickfire flurry of chances and excellent saves during an intense, end-to-end first half. After home goalkeeper Yassine Bounou beat away Federico Gatti's close-range header, Wojciech Szczęsny rescued Juve by scooping Lucas Ocampos' header off the line and tipping over Marcos Acuña's thunderous effort from a considerable distance. The goalkeeper's heroics were almost rewarded when Ángel Di María lofted a chance wide. Moise Kean then saw his low finish from an acute angle strike a post as the pendulum swung Juve's way. With the teams still locked together, it was left to two substitutes to change the game in the second half. Dušan Vlahović chipped in a composed finish with one of his first touches after being introduced in the 63rd minute, but that was matched in quality by Suso's thunderous finish from distance seven minutes later to take the tie to extra time – although not before several more fine saves at either end. Sevilla have never lost a semi-final match at home in this competition, and their remarkable record was extended by Erik Lamela's emphatic 95th-minute header from a Bryan Gil cross. With five minutes remaining Acuña was dismissed for a second bookable offence but his side held on, sealing a place in their seventh Europa League final.

(BBC Sport) Sevilla claimed a record-extending seventh Europa League title as they beat Roma on penalties at a raucous Puskas Arena in Budapest. Gonzalo Montiel, who also scored the winning penalty for Argentina in the World Cup final against France, repeated the trick for the Spanish side following a 1-1 draw, with a retaken spot kick after Roger Ibanez and Gianluca Mancini had missed for Roma. The Spanish side, have now won all seven of the finals they have played in the competition with captain Jesus Navas involved in their first triumph against Middlesbrough in 2006. Their most recent sees them qualify for next season's Champions League despite finishing outside the top four in the La Liga. There will be a feeling that it could have been so different for Roma and their manager Jose Mourinho, who had won all five of the previous European finals he had been involved in and guided the club to inaugural Europa Conference League success last term. Montiel's international teammate Paulo Dybala had deservedly put Roma in front during the first period, racing onto to Italy defender Mancini's incisive pass to expertly steer a low effort past Sevilla goalkeeper Yassine Bounou into the bottom right corner. However, the Serie A side, who also saw Leonardo Spinazzola test Bounou before the break, relinquished their control of a testy encounter which saw 14 players and coaches, including Mourinho booked. And Sevilla drew level 10 minutes after the break with Navas' cross from the right, deflecting off the unfortunate Mancini into his own net, as they repeatedly pressed forward for an equaliser. Roma arguably had the better opportunities to win the contest in normal time with Tammy Abraham and Ibanez unable to convert from close range and Andrea Belotti slicing wide from Lorenzo Pellegrini's clever free-kick. When Lucas Ocampos went down under a challenge from Ibanez, Sevilla appeared to have been handed a golden opportunity to go ahead but, after initially awarding a penalty, English referee Anthony Taylor overturned his decision following a video assistant referee review. That set up a tense additional 30 minutes with Chris Smalling heading against the Sevilla crossbar 11 minutes into stoppage time at the end of extra time before the dramatic finale.
