(The Guardian) 89 min “Pedantic I know,” says Paul McKnight, “but I’d argue Real’s 3-0 win was a heavier defeat for L’pool than 5-2 due to the away goals rule at the time.” The earlier defeat was worse because Brendan Rodgers at the time essentially admitted that he fielded a B-squad against Madrid.

(The Guardian) 90 min More olés from the Real fans; maybe they know a sixth goals is coming. They’ll certainly celebrate well tonight.
90+1 min Three minutes of added time garbage time.

(The Guardian) 90+2 min “Carlo Ancelotti might be in for three weeks of recurring nightmares before the second leg,” says Justin Kavanagh. “Three goals up against a deflated Liverpool at half-time… he’s been here before.”

(The Guardian) 90+3 min Harvey Elliott is booked for a foul on Nacho.Full time: Liverpool 2-5 Real MadridThe end of a unique game. Real Madrid recovered from 2-0 down to humiliate Liverpool in a barely believable second half. note: we'll use this thread for the return fixture in Madrid...

Henderson and Bajcetic have been ruled out Good to see Diaz training with the boys! (The Guardian) Real Madrid make two changes to the starting XI selected for their 5-2 romp at Anfield. Nacho and Toni Kroos take the places of Rodrygo, who drops to the bench, and the hamstrung David Alaba. Liverpool make three changes from that fateful day. In come Ibrahima Konate, Cody Gakpo and, wearing the captain’s armband, James Milner. They replace the usual captain Jordan Henderson, who is ill, Stefan Bajcetic, who is injured, and Joe Gomez, who is benched.

Chris Sutton, Former Blackburn striker on BBC Radio 5 Live: Liverpool have to believe they can do it. In many respects, they have to have a strong end to the season. In many ways the pressure is off. I think the last couple of games have typified Liverpool's season. Once again I thought they turned a corner beating Manchester United by seven, then they go to Bournemouth and put in an insipid display.
Now they come to Madrid with a huge deficit. The first goal will be key. I think Liverpool will score on the evening, the question is can they keep this really talented Madrid team out?
The odds are stacked against them. Nobody expects Liverpool to get a result but they know it's within them. Everything has to go right on the night, so I am going to say it is possible.

(The Guardian) Pre-match postbag o’pessimism. “Not only do Liverpool have no chance of beating Madrid, neither do Manchester City. Madrid with Benzema are unbeatable” – Jeff Sax “I enter today’s match like I did the second leg v Barcelona in 2019. I have no expectations of a good result, but we’ll see what happens. Lucky jersey being employed” – Joe Pearson “I should probably turn to heavy metal but find myself listening to the new Belle & Sebastian new album as the Reds get ready to be fed to the lions fight to the last minute for dignity and that one-percent chance of survival. One of the tunes (below) laments ‘I wish I could be content with the football scores’. I feel that lyric, but am prepared to make an exception today. If the score - against all odds - ends up Real Madrid 0:4 Liverpool FC, I’ll be sure to find some measure of contentment” – Peter Oh Pre-match postbag o’blind optimism. “I am up for this, it’s not a no-hoper, an early Liverpool goal and the plot will twist. Watched too many games that were done and dusted in the Champions knockout that didn’t follow the plot” – Roger Kirkby “Two years ago, Klopp’s 1% chance would have been 0.25% at best and commensurately tanked interest levels in this match. A win of 0-3 or 1-4 wouldn’t have been enough to extend the tie to extra time because of the away goals rule. I’m glad it was scrapped. I’m also sure Mister Klopp shares my sentiments” – Emmanuel Dairo “I keep thinking, because it’s more preferable than wondering about the odds of a shock result tonight and/or chain-eating Crunchies to cope, that James Milner is fluent in Spanish. Maybe the captain’s trash-talk game could be the thing that swings a good result for Liverpool in the end? Obviously, if Real go through, I’m going to put my foot through my A-Level Spanish certificate and send Courtois the bill” – Gillian Kirby

(BBC Sport) 'A near perfect performance needed'The Anfield Wrap's Josh Sexton says Liverpool's history in the Champions League means a comeback against Real Madrid is possible, although unlikely. He told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily: "At this stage it’s improbable, but I’d still say possible. You saw at Anfield in the first leg how composed Real Madrid are. Liverpool need to put in a near perfect performance over 90 minutes." 'The match is more complex'Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has told his side "not to assume" they are through and Liverpool will try to make it "an open match". "We have to do both things, attacking and defending, properly. We will not just defend, we are thinking about the attack," he added. "From a psychological level, the match is more complex for us than Liverpool. "Liverpool come here to give it their all and do their best from minute one, whatever happens. We saw that from the first leg. We will try to do all we can from the beginning but we have more questions than the opponent."

Dion Dublin, Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live: I believe there is a little door ajar for Liverpool. It’s a very, very tight door that they have to kick open against Real.
The last game I saw them play was against Manchester United and I thought ‘wow’. If they can perform like that again, they may have a sniff.
The only thing about this tie is it’s Real Madrid. If it was anybody else, I would give Liverpool more of a chance. I do believe there is still a small chance if they can hit the heights they did against United performance-wise. Chris Sutton, Former Blackburn striker on BBC Radio 5 Live: The biggest thing for Liverpool is not to concede. This is going to be a tall order but there has to be an element of balance to the way Liverpool play because Real Madrid have players that can pick you off.
