Got computer problems again; this time, potentially hardware related. I'll try and keep everyone updated as to the situation; hopefully, I won't be offline very long. *fingers crossed*

Update: it appears to be an ethernet card failure; I'm hoping to get it back by the end of the week but no promises. In the meantime, have fun and I shall return! liverpool scarf-1 e7005859 e7005859

Update: Got a BIOS error this morning; talked to the computer place and got a workaround in place but its' only going to last so long before I have to get a new computer so.... *blows out a long breath* ...apparently, whatever fried the ethernet card back towards late August must've done worse; got a new computer lined up and am just going to run the computer non-stop until the bloody end of it.

I did say something like this would happen. Make sure the pc you have lined up, once the current one takes its final crap, has a warranty or at least one you can add to it. (It's the only way to help them last - some do live on their computer after all - and like humans, machines break even if given care)

(It's the only way to help them last - some do live on their computer after all - and like humans, machines break even if given care) I've got one lined up - a Dell Slimline desktop w/Windows 10 - that I'm going to get; after the computer tech and I talked, I just decided to leave the computer on 24/7 and see how long it'll last (HP's are supposed to be rugged so we'll see).

lol@ what Macca wrote. Be nice to him. He's had 2 computers compared to me having 3. Webster, I had 3 slimline HP's and all went out on me over the course of 2 years. A Dell isn't much better though it is a slightly newer line. That I know of, they don't come with a warranty if they are out of box. Slimline, no matter what company makes them tends to run hot so do yourself a favor early on.... get an extra fan or a fan base for it to sit in. Keeping it on at all times is better for it since it will demand restarts thanx to windows lol. 8/10 times a pc begins to glitch because of hardware .dll so a warranty is nice since you get those updates with one. As to the ruggedness of the HP.. most of the time, that would be correct but it also depends on the user so... Running any pc all the time is better than shutting down and restarting hours later since it takes a lot of juice to get it up and going again. That is hard on the pc. Keep that in mind with the newer one as well because until you can afford a top of the line pc, you will run into issues at some point anyway. My Dell is demanding a cleaning along with a new keyboard and it is less than 6 months old. tsk tsk. Kinda like people that way, I'd think. hahaha

Kinda like people that way, I'd think. hahaha Well, you're supposed to clean them every month or so; a nice bottle of compressed air usually does the trick. What I'm probably going to do, babe, is go into the computer shop and purchase the Dell Slimline I've spoken of next Thursday when I get my retirement check, then bring my HP 6005 in the following week and let them transfer my bookmarks (that's the only thing I care about; I'd go apeshit if I lost 14 years or so of bookmarks, babe) over to it and pick it up that Friday (NOv. 2nd, I think). I've had the computer on 24/7 since Oct. 3rd and its' run pretty darn good; only things I've had to do are cut the Windows Update monitor off and set the sleep monitors as far as possible (5hrs. max) but other than those things, it runs just fine.

oh shush about compressed air, I'd be bound to make a joke about it. A gross one even. But meh, doesn't do me any good to use the compressed air since I can't open the tower at all so the dirt and dust can come out. It will have to go to the shop. Knowing me however, I'll have them fine-tune the computer as well. Win10 likes to hog too many resources and with each update, that has gotten worse. It's 'busy season' so they will love me taking advantage of the warranty for something so simple. haha
Sounds like you have it all planned out so that is good. As to the old pc, unless you are trading it for a discount on the new, keep it. You can use it to do all those searches till it dies completely. Better to use the pc going out than the new in that case. Make the pc work hard for its final days. Then, you can keep the hard drive, reader/burner drive if it has one and power supply for a future pc. Very easy to keep those things stored. Ask your computer person how to go about doing that if you don't know how which at a guess, I'd say you don't or you wouldn't depend on a techie so much. Those things are universal but sadly, a slimline only holds so much. And your bookmarks... I use google to keep mine in tact, you're so old fashioned. hahahaha Bookmarks haven't been a worry for years. It's all those programs and pictures I lost on my old computers that I wish had, had backups.

I know enough to know to keep a computer tech on speed dial if its' anything serious; otherwise, I just let them walk me through problems... --And as for the bookmarks, pictures and other stuff? Like I said, I got 14+ years of them; I'd like to keep them if possible... 1

lol, yes Win10 rather sucks but I am stuck with it so I try~ not to complain too much. Besides, plenty of things online to read on how to make using win10 better and easier and I apply all I find. Still a pain though. You keep saying that!!! haha Perhaps I just like fixing what I can myself and leave the techies alone as much as possible. They do tend to charge a bit much after all. Might explain why I've through more computers than you as well... hmm... Meh, remember, I've been on a pc more years than you have. I DO understand the importance of not losing stuff. I just use a different method, less old fashioned than you even if I am as old~ Just let me harass you! Makes me smile getting away with it after all... *whistles a lil tune* Use that whip on Macca, he needs it more than me!
