More evidence is coming to light that Facebook is "throttling" and even censoring conservative content – this coming from a whistleblower.
There's a new term in the social media world: "deboosting." The term came to public attention after a former employee of Facebook came to the people at Project Veritas with an armful of company confidential documents. Veritas founder James O'Keefe, in his latest exposé video, says deboosting is when the techies in Menlo Park start messing with our Facebook Live feed.
"Props such as 'share this video' are disabled," O'Keefe describes. "Interactive notifications are also disabled. And the live feed boost associated with a live, streaming video on Facebook is removed."
Basically a user can send out a video, but almost no one can see it. The anonymous former employee says it's entirely intentional.
"I'm not a programmer but I can read English just fine," she tells O'Keefe. "When I see 'reduce live distribution,' it means preventing the distribution of this live feed."
She says an artificial intelligence computer transcribes the audio in a user's live feed and flags certain terms. While it's meant to catch violent threats and pornography and the like, the whistleblower says she's seen it most often to censor another sort of content:
--O'Keefe: "Where did you see this 'deboost' language?"
--Whistleblower: "I would see it appear on several different conservative pages."
Of course it's an artificial intelligence program making the call – but presumably a person had to write the code.
