Tough game. Super lucky against Leicester, we need to step up a few gears otherwise we will get turned over.

(The Guardian) Premier League: Brentford v LiverpoolIn sixth place in the table, 15 points behind league leaders Arsenal but just four behind Manchester United in the fourth Champions League qualification spot, Liverpool travel to Brentford on the back of consecutive, if not hugely impressive festive wins over Aston Villa and Leicester City. In Brentford they take on a side that is just five points behind them in 10th and also unbeaten since the resumption of the league following the World Cup. A draw against Tottenham followed by victory over West Ham means Thomas Frank’s side have every reason to be confident as they welcome their exalted opposition to the Brentford Community Stadium. Kick-off in west London is at 5.30pm (GMT) but stay tuned in the meantime for team news and build-up.

(The Guardian) Brentford v Liverpool line-ups-- Brentford: Raya; Jorgensen, Pinnock, Mee; Roerslev, Janelt, Norgaard, Jensen, Henry; Wissa, Mbeumo. Subs: Strakosha, Canos, Dasilva, Ghoddos, Lewis-Potter, Damsgaard, Bech Sorensen, Crama, Trevitt. -- Liverpool: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Tsimikas; Elliott, Fabinho, Thiago; Salah, Nunez, Oxlade-Chamberlain. Subs: Kelleher, Gomez, Keita, Jones, Robertson, Carvalho, Matip, Bajcetic, Phillips. --Despite Thomas Frank’s upbeat talk yesterday, Ivan Toney is not in Brentford’s matchday squad and who is to say the Dane was not just messing with Liverpool’s minds when he said the striker would be OK for today’s game. In other news pertaining to Brentford, midfielder Josh Dasilva drops to the bench, while there are starts for Yoane Wissa and Vitaly Yanelt. Kostas Tsimikas comes in at left-back for Liverpool in place of Andy Robertson, while Ibrahima Konate replaces Joel Matip in the heart of their defence. Fabinho returns in place of Jordan Henderson, who is sidelined with a concussion.

(BBC Sport) Brentford manager Thomas Frank speaking to Sky Sports: "[Ivan Toney] was close-ish to being on the bench and available. Ivan is a monster, he is capable of dealing with a lot of pain and niggles. But today was too close, one or two days more could have done it. So we expect him to be close to being available against West Ham. "Of course taking the key man offensively out of the team is a miss. That said, I know we have a very good replacement in Yoane Wissa. "Last time he started here he scored and got a penalty. No doubt he adds something different and I don't think it's any secret that Liverpool have a high line. Wissa likes to run in behind so hopefully he can do that. "It was a very entertaining game to be a part of last year, maybe the most entertaining of the season. I hope we make it as an entertaining game today, just with us winning 4-3. We are playing against a very good team but the key thing is we need to be aggressive and brave." Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp to Sky Sports on captain Jordan Henderson's absence: "Jordan has a concussion, it's normal procedure. It's not massive but we always follow the protocols. "The next day we did a test and it was not 100% so we follow the protocol. He will be ready for the next game again but not for this."

Harry De Cosemo, BBC Sport reporter: Cody Gakpo is something of a trailblazer.
Liverpool's latest signing, who joined from PSV Eindhoven at the start of the January transfer window, has risen to prominence over the last 18 months, becoming one of Europe's most in-form and in-demand players.
Tracked by a string of top clubs, including Manchester United, the 23-year-old forward has scored 21 goals and provided 25 assists in 41 Eredivisie games since the start of the 2020-21 season.
Predominantly a left-sided player, who can also play centrally, Gakpo's stock rose even further with three goals at the World Cup in Qatar for the Netherlands.

(BBC Sport) Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp speaking to Sky Sports: "I have no news [on Cody Gakpo]. We hope he gets permission tomorrow to train fully with us, that would be great but that's all I know." On performance against Leicester: "We have talked about it. We need to make sure we all know exactly what we wanted and what we did. But it's always the same when you have another night to sleep on it you realise Leicester actually did really well. "I's the Premier League, yes we took it as a positive that we came through, but today it will be a tough test again with all the intensity that Brentford put in, so let's see. "We have to be really prepared arriving here after playing every three days and you cannot do the preparation anywhere close to what they can do. But I respect Brentford because they use the time off really well. Thomas Frank said it himself, against the top six they do not care about possession so it will be a very direct style."

(BBC Sport) Mohamed Salah has been directly involved in four goals in his last two away Premier League appearances (3 goals, 1 assist). In total, he has netted 55 Premier League goals away from home for Liverpool. A goal here will see him become their record away scorer in the competition, with the Egyptian currently level with Michael Owen.

Gary Rose, BBC Sport reporter: Darwin Nunez might have cast some envious glances at Wout Faes' finishing during Liverpool's game with Leicester on Friday night.
Granted, Faes' two goals were in the wrong net as far as the Foxes defender was concerned, gifting Jurgen Klopp's side a 2-1 win. But while Faes scored with unwanted ease, Nunez's wastefulness in front of goal continued as he missed a hatful of chances to give Liverpool a far more comfortable margin of victory.
The 23-year-old's most notable efforts came in the second half as he sliced wide from close range, before lashing high over the bar when in a good position.
They followed on from some big misses in the Carabao Cup defeat to Manchester City on 22 December and in the 3-1 win against Aston Villa on Boxing Day.

(BBC Sport) Liverpool have earned four Premier League wins in a row for the first time since a run of 10 victories between January and April last year. But they have only won their opening league fixture of the calendar year in two of the past eight attempts (D3, L3). The Reds have dropped 20 points in their 16 league matches this season, just two points fewer than in the whole of 2021-22.
